I just won a book on GoodReads, through their First Reads program, and wrote a review and thought I’d post it here too. I’m not really “reviewing” books again, as far as unsolicited donations, but when I do review something either on my own or as a result of being provided with a review [...]

Well, let me tell you: a mishmash of styles (as usual) and one of the most fabulous books I’ve read in a very very long time, that’s what! The most fabulous one is Passage by Connie Willis. If you don’t know her, you should. I first read her in novella form - Inside Job and All About Emily are incredible. Sassy, snappy, quirky, clever and just plain fun - full of allusions and references from history, pop culture, sci-fi… I loved her so much I decided to try her novels. The first (To Say Nothing of the Dog) was just not for me - despite a fabulous title and great premise full of time travel and Willisian quirkiness and fabulous reviews/blurbs, I just could not get into it. Undaunted, I tried again - yes, her novellas were THAT good - and this one, well, this one is amazing. Passage is about NDEs - near death experiences - and the people who study them (and live through them), but it’s also about the quest for meaning in life - and death. It’s beautifully written full of incredibly real characters who live and breathe and practically jump off the page. I cannot say enough good things about it - and I’m not even done. I’ve just hit the big plot jump alluded to in the jacket blurb, and it’s killing me to not sit and read it through to the end, but time, blogs, and kids wait for no book…

I have a bizarre love of bookplates. Yes, I know, you are shocked that I, Jill-Elizabeth, love something book-related. And you are shocked that I, Jill-Elizabeth, love something anachronistic. And something that marks books as mine, mine, all mine.
It’s true.
I love bookplates. Ever since I was a little girl and received my first set of collectible books – six green and cream leather-bound Louisa May Alcott books from my godfather, Uncle Paul (hello Uncle Paul!) – with bookplates inside, I have loved bookplates. I love the dignified and sophisticated way that they mark something as a part of my very own library. To me, they signify that I take books seriously, that they are valuable and important possessions worthy of identification as mine.

So I received the new Kindle and have downloaded my first books – hooray! So far, I have only added free/open access stuff, a couple of free sample chapters, and the few electronic versions of review books that I have taken on by special agreement. Already I have like forty things to read. Sigh. This is a great thing, don’t get me wrong. But it’s also a little maddening.
Why you ask? Because those forty exist on top of the hundreds (literally) of things at the house that exist in the amorphous and ever-expanding “to be read” pile. Well, to be honest, it’s actually not a pile – that would be impractical, as it would overtake me, the rooms, and anyone visiting. It’s more a series of shelves. Or several series of shelves, to be exact. Seriously – I have a problem.
My name is Jill Elizabeth and I am a compulsive book buyer. Hello, Jill-Elizabeth…

So, like everyone else I know, I never seem to have enough time to read anymore. This is annoying for many reasons, primarily because it means that the “to be read” pile continues to grow on what feels like an exponential scale. But also because of my reading challenges – one external and one internal. The external (111 in ’11) says I need to read (duh) 111 books this year. The internal doesn’t have a specific requirement, but does require that I look at statistical comparisons month-by-month between this year and the past nearly ten years.
I know, I know – I’ve complained about the difficulties of reading time and reading challenges in here before. But I’m going to do it again. With a twist. The twist: this time not only am I complaining about the lack of time for numerous and lengthy books, but I’m also providing a nifty solution to the problem. That is, today I will tell you how I turned a sneaky-ish way of increasing my finished-book count into some really great finds.
